4 out of 5 stars Great, but...   August 4, 2010

First, I love it. I won't review the actual tool as it's great and I have nothing to add. I've owned/used countless leathermans over the years and I love the tools.

But...

as another person has mentioned, the finish on this tool is less than ideal. It comes off on your hands and anything you touch for the week or two of use. In addition, it's easily scratched during this time. No, Neither effect the function, but it's also not what I expect from leatherman. Concerned that the one I received didn't have a chance to finish curing, I emailed Leatherman (see below). I'm not sure why they can't cure the finish before sending it out or use a different type of black finish (i.e. gun blueing).

It's still on my belt and I love it, but come on leatherman, fix it.

Hello,
Thank you for your email and your interest in Leatherman Tools.

The black coating is applied on the exterior of the tool. It does come off on your hands especially at the beginning. The oils from your hand do help to set the black so the more you handle the tool, the more the color is set.

The black is on the surface only, so scratches will show. The black tools were developed with the goal of keeping reflection off the surface with military applications in mind where scratches are perhaps less important.

I hope this helps.
Best regards,

Great product! Only shortcoming is the finish on the item. It should be more professionally done; however, it doesn't detract from the tools utility.

Great tool. This is my first full size Leatherman and I could not have chosen a better one. It has everything that I could need on short notice. All the blades are very sharp which was great to open the box and find. I work at a hockey rink and doing little repairs here and there is a real pain when you have to walk back and forth between rinks to get other tools (pliers & screw drivers). The sheath is great a bit cumbersome but it covers the tool and the extra file that comes with. The black oxide coating is a great addition as I was avoiding buying a Leatherman because I don't like shiny knifes. Plus it just looks cool. Well worth the money.

Its a really good tool. The tiny flathead screwdriver helped me fix my watch the day I got it. The blades are super sharp. I have never had a knife come that sharp from the factory, super plus for that feature. Yours hands get really black either form the coating or oil on the tools, or both. But overall very happy with this tool.
