Amazon.com Product Description
From the renowned company that created the Swiss Army Knife more than a century ago comes the Outrider, a complete set of tools for outdoorsmen, fishermen, hikers, and just about everyone else. Measuring 4-3/8 inches long, the Outrider is stylishly cased in a timeless red housing with the familiar Victorinox logo on the side. More importantly, the unit contains a variety of stainless-steel and plastic tools appropriate for just about any occasion. The standard tools include a large button-lock blade, a can opener with a small screwdriver, a bottle opener with a large screwdriver and wire stripper, a small set of scissors, and a long, small Phillips screwdriver. That's just the beginning, however, as the Outrider also includes a toothpick, tweezers, a reamer, a wood saw, a corkscrew, and a key ring. In short, there's no better accessory for hunting, camping, and fishing trips, along with general around-the-house tasks.

As with all Victorinox items, the Outrider is made to exacting standards, with dozens of individual parts and hundreds of steps going into its construction. Victorinox attends to every detail, from selecting the finest materials to performing the final inspection. In addition, each individual tool has been hardened in a different way to stand up to its designated use. Outfitted with a plastic housing, the Outrider carries a lifetime warranty.

About Swiss Army Knives
In 1884, Swiss cutler Karl Elsener set up shop in Ibach-Schwyz, installing a waterwheel in Tobelbach Brook to run his grinding and polishing machines. Thus began what would become the international brand name Victorinox, a combination of Victoria, for Elsener's mother, and "inox," or stainless steel. Today, Victorinox produces watches, luggage, clothing, and, famously, Swiss Army Knives. The original product dates to 1897, when Elsener patented the Swiss Officer's and Sports Knife he supplied to the Swiss Army. Following World War II, American servicemen and women shopping in PX stores shortened the name to Swiss Army Knife, which lives on in English-speaking countries around the world and has become a metaphor for versatility.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite Victorinox for camping and outdoors   July 12, 2010
Alberto Vargas (San Francisco, CA USA)
This knife is ideal for outdoors and camping. I have tested it while overnight camping, and everyone in our group loves it.

The most useful features no doubt are the long locking blade, long wood saw, and good scissors. It also has a philips screwdriver and cork screw, which is unusual for a Swiss Army knife.

Since this is an oversized model (compared to "regular" rounded-handle Victorinox), the blade is actually long enough for most tasks; it is approximately 4 inches. It locks for safety, which is important in the woods when you are cutting something tough and there is no first aid nearby. I like this blade better than those on similar-sized one-handed Victorinox models because the Outrider has a useful sharp tip and is easier to sharpen, while the one-handed models have rounded tips and hard-to-sharpen serrations.

The wood saw alone would be worth the price of this knife. It literally leaves smaller models like Victorinox Farmer or Huntsman in the dust - those saws are OK, but this one clearly outperforms them. With short saws, every fraction of an inch in length matters a lot. Friends and I have cut plenty of firewood with this thing.

The rest of the tools are pretty standard Victorinox. Except the knife blade, nothing else locks. Some trivia: this knife apparently was chosen by Malaysia as their official army knife.

The knife is too bulky and heavy for daily carry in the city, however. It is noticeably larger than a "regular" sized Swiss Army knife. I use it only when hiking of camping. I recommend attaching to it a tiny keychain LED light - it makes a great combo.

4 out of 5 stars Bigger than I expected   June 12, 2010
Lionman (Michigan)
I bought this knife with graduation money to be my constant pocket companion. Unfortunately it is just too big for me to carry around all the time. I love the knife, but I need to be wearing special deep-pocketed knife-pants to carry it. Great for camping, not so much for every day.

5 out of 5 stars Big, but not too big.   April 26, 2010

After carrying a Vic Champion Plus or SwissChamp for a while I was interested in getting back into the Vic 111 mm stable of knives. I'm a big man, 6'3" tall, 275#'s, I like a big knife with as many functions as possible, that is without a knife that's too big and heavy and that pulls my pants down when worn in a pouch on my belt. My major requirement in a SAK are three things, scissors, in line Phillips driver, and a corkscrew to place my mini driver for my glasses. In the VIc Outrider I get all those plus a punch awl, can opener/small flathead, large flathead/cap lifter/wire crimper and a true, usable saw as a bonus, all in a compact package not anywhere too heavy or bulky for EDC. Buy this knife if you value what I do in a multi tool, carry a pair of dedicated pliers if you feel you must as no maker provides an adequate all in one package IMHO.

5 out of 5 stars Great Knife at a Competitive Price!   February 28, 2010

Love the knife! Perfect tool when out on the lake or trail. Would also be great for use as a supplement to a fixed blade when minimalist backpacking/extended-stay hunting. The new design is comfortable in the hand whether making fuzz-sticks or cleaning fish. Despite what some have said, the lock is solid. My only complaint is that I would prefer the main blade to have been positioned in the center of the tool. For example, rather than Knife, tool, tool, tool, I would have preferred tool, tool, Knife, tool, tool.

4 out of 5 stars Decent knife   November 30, 2009

would be nice if it had the philips head screwdriver instead of the corkscrew. the corkscrews on swiss army knives are becoming an anachronism. they are actually a pain in the neck to actually use as a corkscrew and are of limited utility for anything else. otherwise great knife.

I find that the thing I use most is the scissors, so I would strongly recommend that the buyer select a model thusly equipped. They are VERY handy
