A sweetheart of a knife September 3, 2010 Mark Sethre (San Jose, CA) This knife requires at least a normal thumbnail to overcome the slightly increased "umph" to open these blades. If you chew your nails to the nub, or have diseased nails, choose a different knife. Maybe for the those who paint their nails, avoid this knife. But for the great majority, opening these blades is not an issue at all. This is the perfect light duty knife for those times you don't want your pants weighted down with the Cadet, and Cadet is my EDC. Or when you don't want that Swiss Army Knife (with the 6 to 10 blades) lump in your pants. If you want a small knife, avoid the Classics because they're just too small. The Bantam is the smallest knife I'd carry. The Bantam is elegant. It's a natural.
My favorite pocket knife August 1, 2010 Mr. T I have used several pocket knifes over the years and this is by far my favorite. It is thin, just the right size, and simple. It contains what I consider the most essential tools without unnecessary others that just add bulk. The exterior does not crack or wear like the plastic clad ones. My only complaint is the lack of a small ring to attach to a key ring. Since it is not attached to my keys, it can slide out of my pocket relatively easily and I've lost a couple over the last few years.
Light weight, light dubty. July 19, 2010 10-t It is a great product if you use it for what it is intended for. It is very lightweight and compact, that is what seems to be driving it's design. In this it excels. The blade comes sharp, I can shave some hare off my arm (but not split a hair like a proper razor)and sharp enough for any useful task and reducing the need for excess pressure that could cause injury.
The can opener works, but not as well as a P-38 or the other can openers. Same with the bottle opener. When weight isn't a factor, I'll have specialized tools to do these jobs.
The wire stripper cut is the same size and might work better than the normal Swiss army one on other knives because of it's thinner profile, but I have not tested it on this knife yet.
The screwdriver part seems fine for normal tasks, but I don't know if I would try to use it to remove rusted solid screws or a pry bar to open paint cans.
The handle is a trade off. Thin and unnoticeable to carry, but might be uncomfortable in the hand during prolonged use. The checker pattern a bit blunted and doesn't provide a rock solid grip(still a great improvement over those plastic ones), but not sharp enough eat into the hand during prolonged use.
Light weight and for light duties with the occasional odd job, this is a great carry around knife. For the price, quality, and capabilities of this knife I think it is a great value.
Finest one ounce knife for daily use July 12, 2010 Alberto Vargas (San Francisco, CA USA) I can't think of a better knife that weighs just an ounce (29 grams)! Size is really where this knife shines: it is only 84mm long (3.3 inches), which makes it a bit shorter than regular Swiss Army knives, and less than 6mm or 1/4 inches in width. Blade is shorter than 3 inches for those who need to observe this limit. This knife is so slim and light that it literally disappears in your pocket, which is the main reason I bought it. It is a great for dress clothing or on more formal occasions when a thicker or longer knife would be out of place.
The combo tool on this Bantam, which sits across the main blade, is actually surprisingly useful. It works fine as bottle opener and flathead screwdriver, and I have tried it successfully on large philips screws. Supposedly it also works as a can opener but not as well as a dedicated one - I have not tried as I do not open cans with a knife.
I have quite a few other Swiss Army Knives of various sizes, and here is how this one compares:
It has metal alox scales, which makes it very scratch resistant when it shares the pocket with coins or keys. It is one of the few SAKs with only one layer, so it is thinner than most Victorinox knives, even thinner than the tiny Classic models. Unlike most Victorinoxes, this does not have that small keychain loop, which makes it smoother for pocket carry. Compared to the 58mm Classic line, this knife has the advantage of a larger and more substantial blade - in fact, the blade width and thickness looks identical to regular sized Victorinox, only a tad bit shorter. The closest model to this one (in size and features) is the popular Victorinox Cadet, but it has two layers (almost twice as thick and heavy), and it does not really add new functionality (mainly splits the combo tool into two separate tools).
Of course, the bigger and thicker SAKs have their clear advantages and dedicated tools like scissors, cork screw, metal and wood saws, tweezers, pen, philips screwdrivers, magnifying glass, and what have you, but those come with the cost of bulk and weight, and may be better suited for travel or outdoors. I have a number of the larger models and use them, but they are not as minimalist as this Bantam. In fact, these days I usually carry the Bantam along with a tiny Classic on my keychain, which adds scissors, tweezers, and nail file for a pretty well rounded set of tools for the urban jungle :)
Overall this is a good-looking, minimalist, and yet very useful Swiss Army knife. Highly recommended.
Slim and light June 5, 2010 BRENT OGUIN Knife is very slim yet built very well. Easily fits in dress pants. All I wanted was a blade and to be able to open beers, this knife does the trick.
